Technology InitiativeTechnology plays a primary role in the classroom. As an educator it is my duty to ensure that my students receive a quality education. Students today are growing up in a digital world. It is necessary for students to not only use technology, but to learn how to use technology in the most effective and efficient manner. Technology should be used as a tool, and like any other tool in the classroom students need to have practice and be guided in the appropriate manner to use that tool to improve a learning outcome.
In order to implement technology successfully into the classroom, it is important to first evaluate the learning outcome. Using the SAMR model, (picture on right) I ask myself, "Will the students achieve the learning outcome at hand with the use of technology?" Then I ask myself, "Will the technology transform the learning experience to meet the learning outcome? Or, will the technology serve as a distraction?" I ask the necessary questions to ensure that I am using technology as a tool to transform the overall learning experience. Of course, technology is not going to transform and "redefine" every lesson as explained in the SAMR model, but it is important to consider the effect of technology usage in the classroom. It is important that technology does not take the place of the teacher. While it is important for students to have a technology skill set, it is just as important for students to develop social and communication skills through human interaction. Technology can expand the walls beyond the general classroom, but without having the skills to communicate with one another in person, we are doing society a major disservice. All tools are best used in moderation. Technology should be seen as a tool, and should be used to create meaningful learning experiences in the classroom. |
